High-Tech Magic's The Missing Dollar Solution
So where did the missing dollar go?
TAXES! (Especially if you live in the People's Republic of Maryland!)

Seriously though, here's the REAL solution:
The dollar wasn’t lost. The men only spent $25 for the room, not $30. They were handed back the $5 as change. They tipped the bellboy $2. So,
Room cost: $25 Bellboy tip: $2 Total cost $27 for 3 men or $9 for each man
Another way to look at it is the room only cost $25. So the 3 men actually spent $8.3333 each for the room. Since they originally paid $10 each but kept a $1 bill each, they actually spent $9 for the room or $27. (This was their total cost). Since the room only cost them $8.3333 each, there was $0.6667 per man extra. $0.6667 times 3 men equals $2, which they gave to the bellboy.
The men spent: $27 or $9.0000 per man Room cost: $25 or $8.3333 per man Difference: $ 2 or $0.6667 per man which was the tip
The problem is when you take one figure, the $27 total the men spent on the room and add the $2 tip, but you really should subtract the tip from the total $27 paid by all 3 to equal the cost of the room. By adding it to the $27 to make a total of $29, it seems like a dollar is missing, but in actuality, it was never there to begin with!
